TACF is offering one chance to win the incredibly crafted, one of a kind American chestnut segmented wooden bowl filled with:

5 Chestnut recipe cards, a small jar of chestnut honey from Spain, and 4 hand-pollinated chestnut seeds from TACF's new breeding program.

 It is a segmented bowl, meaning that each of the 18 angled pieces is cut to exactly 10 degrees on each side. The pieces between the angled pieces are called splines, inserted to make a weave type pattern with the end grain facing inward. Each ring has 36 individual pieces in 7 rows for a total of 252 pieces in the rings. The bowl is 9.5" at the top and is finished with multiple coats of tung oil. This stunning piece is valued at $350!

In addition to the beautiful chestnut bowl, the raffle winner will receive four hand-pollinated chestnut seeds from TACF's breeding program. Hand-pollination is the gold-standard for selecting for complex traits such as blight resistance, because unlike open pollination, both the female parent and male parent are known to show promising performance. This is the very first chance for anyone to plant seeds from TACF's new breeding program as a backyard planting; all other hand-pollinated seeds are restricted for planting in research settings.

Although both parents are known to be good performers, blight resistance is a complexly inherited trait and regardles of which traits are inherited, the majority of disease expression depends on how suitable the environmental conditions are where it is planted. Winners will be asked to sign a Germplasm Agreement to receive seeds, and replacements will not be available because all other hand-pollinated seeds are grown for research.
